Emergency?

If your pet is exhibiting concerning symptoms or experiencing a medical emergency, please call our clinic at (407) 352-2579. We’ll help you through it.

Did you know that female dogs and cats can get pregnant when they are only 5 months old, or that the culprit and father might be one of her litter mates? Pets can do crazy things when it comes to animal urges and instincts. Deciding to get your pet spayed or neutered is one of the sanest and humane decisions any pet owner can make.

Spay and Neuter procedures remove a pet’s ability to reproduce. “Spay” is the procedure for females and “Neuter” is the procedure for male cats and dogs. Dating back to 1970, the procedures have become a common practice today that has helped owners, pets, and society by reducing the number of strays, animals in shelters, and volumes of shelter animals needing to be put down.

At Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital, we understand this can be a big decision for you. As pet owners ourselves, we know you want someone you can trust. Someone that will treat your pet as if it was their own.

Why Choose Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital

Your pet’s safety and comfort are our top priorities when visiting our animal hospital. Unfortunately, spay and neuter procedures can be painful. That is why our vet and team vigilantly check on your pet’s vitals (blood pressure check, ECG, oxygen saturation, IV fluid) and their comfort from surgery through recovery.

At Dr. Phillips our Spay and Neuter services:

  • Use innovative pain management techniques
  • Provide all information and answers before the procedure
  • Administer safe anesthesia to your pet for the operation
  • Keep your pet warm through the process using warming blankets
  • Provide a recovery plan with pain medication for after the procedure

At Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital, we want to make getting your pet spayed or neutered as easy and painless as possible. Contact us at (407) 352-2579 to discuss getting your pet spayed or neutered and book their appointment today.

“Drove 30 miles on a Sunday to get my cat checked out… Prices are reasonable, typical prices you would find at a regular Vets office. The staff and doctor handled my cat gently and I saw no rough handling… I would definitely recommend this clinic to family and friends. Vet and staff are friendly and provided thorough instruction / advice.”

Why Spay Or Neuter Your Pet?

Deciding to spay or neuter your pet brings a range of benefits for you, your pet, and also the community. From curbing bad behaviors, reducing risks of certain diseases, deterring un-welcomed guests, and helping control animal populations, here are some of the benefits and reasons to spay or neuter your pet.

It’s Good For Your Pet

Getting your pet spayed or neutered helps your pet live a longer, healthier, and safer life. Aside from reducing the risk of diseases and health issues, getting your pet spayed or neutered lets them spend more time with their family with less time in a punishment or safety cage.

Some of the benefits for your pet:

  • Reduced risk of contracting difficult-to-treat health problems
  • Eliminates risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease in males
  • Females ‘in heat’ need to be protected from other dogs to prevent unwanted pregnancy, resulting in extra time in cages or being away from home
  • Spayed female cats and dogs have a lower chance of developing reproductive complications (pyometra, uterine or ovarian cancer, and other diseases)
  • Prevent risk of marking their territory on something they shouldn’t
  • Growing medical evidence shows females spayed before first heat are generally healthier

It’s Good For You

Life will give you plenty of responsibilities. Your pet having unplanned puppies or kittens should not be one of them. Unneutered dogs are known to be more aggressive and may urine to mark their territory on property or possessions, whether it’s yours, your families, or friends. Curbing these habits require training with the easier option being to get your pet neutered.

Some of the benefits for you:

  • Reduces urinating on property or possessions to mark territory
  • Reduced roaming and howling in male cats
  • Unspayed females who are “in heat” attract neighborhood and stray pets that want in
  • Studies show most male dogs and cats become less aggressive
  • No unplanned litters requiring homes for all your pets puppies or kittens
  • Excessive barking, mounting, and other dominance-related behaviors are reduced
  • Reduced risk of expensive and difficult to treat health problems

It’s Good For The Community

Communities spend millions of dollars each year controlling unwanted animals. Many of these animals end up as strays on the streets that endanger local wildlife. Some end up in packed animal shelters, waiting to be adopted and eventually having to be put down. By bringing your pet into Dr. Phillips Animal Hospital to be spayed or neutered, your pet becomes part of the solution instead of possibly adding to the problem.

Spay & Neuter Myths: Your Pet Won’t Become Fat, Lazy or Less Protective

If your dog gets neutered they will be less aggressive but not less protective. Less aggressive means less risk to other animals or people, fewer issues leaving them at animal daycare, fewer concerns about fights or marking his territory at friend or families places. Their natural instinct is to protect their home and family, and their personality is more formed by genetics and their environment, not sex hormones.

Regardless of whether your pet is fixed or not, a healthy and controlled diet with plenty of exercise keeps them healthy. Depriving them of either presents more of a health risk than to spay or neuter your pet.

“Compared to the private clinics in the area, the prices were very reasonable. Quality was wonderful, the staff was great, and they made sure I understood every step of the way what was going on and what treatment options were available. My pet needed help after hours, and instead of having to pay an arm and a leg at the emergency clinic, I was surprised to find out that they were open until 11pm on weekdays! What a life-saver !”

When to Spay or Neuter Pets

What age can you spay or neuter pets?

Dogs and cats can be spayed or neutered at any age. For puppies and kittens, it is from 5 months old or older and weighing 3 pounds. It is recommended to spay or neuter your pet as young as possible as this is when they have the quickest recovery time. For females, if spayed before her first heat at 5 to 6 months old breast cancer can almost completely be prevented.

How long should you wait to spay your pet after they have kittens or puppies?

If your dog or cat has just had a litter, it is recommended to wait for 6 to 8 weeks before having them spayed or neutered. This allows time to nurse their puppies and kittens until they are weaned. Remember, your pet can still get pregnant during this time. If this is a concern we can discuss how to get your pet spay surgery while nursing.

Spay and Neuter Procedure

What is the procedure like?

Pets dropped off between 8:30 am and 9 am can go home by 5 pm the same day. The procedure for cats and dogs entails surgery with “spay” for females removing their reproductive organs and “neuter” for males removing their testicles. Anesthesia is administered by our trained technician that monitors your pet’s blood pressure, respiratory rate, body temperature, and blood oxygen saturation during the operation. We treat your pet with pain management techniques through this process. Following the surgery, pain medication, antibiotics, and protection collars are provided along with instructions on how to help your pet through the recovery process.

When did it start?

In the 1970s before spaying and neutering were introduced, stray and feral animals were increasing in communities to the point of overpopulation. Animal shelters at the time were overrun, taking in a 5x higher volume than today. Staff were forced to euthanize animals at alarmingly high rates as an attempt to curb the population growth, peaking at 100 cats and dogs for every 1,000 people. In 1970, the first low-cost spay and neuter clinic for pets was opened in Los Angeles followed by the ASPCA in 1972 making it a requirement for all adopted pets to be sterilized. With the decline in animal shelter numbers, spaying and neutering for pets gained momentum through support by the feral cat trap-neuter-release program and No Kill Movement. Getting animals spayed and neutered has become a common practice today that has helped save the lives of countless animals, resulting in a 90% decrease in euthanasia or 12.5 dogs and cats for every 1,000 people.

How much do spaying and neutering cost?

Our spay and neuter service cost varies depending on the age, sex, and size of your pet. Compared to the cost and responsibility of looking after a mother for two months during pregnancy plus two months until the kittens and puppies are weaned, getting your pet spayed is a much smaller, one-time investment. Our vet and team will be happy to go over the exact costs for your pet and answer any of your questions in person or on the phone.
